I used to like watching Columbo. Peter Falk was the disheveled, underestimated detective that is much smarter and shrewder than those he questions give him credit. He would often act lost and confused and bewildered only to nail them in the end when they least expected it.
The modus operandi always included his tag line, "Oh, yeah, one more thing..."; that one more thing was usually what the suspect least expected and was the proof that Columbo knew who had done it all along. It is uncanny how often we get ourselves in trouble the more we talk...
Today's word is from Matthew 12:36 & 37, NIV, which reads, "But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned."
It is what we say that gets in most trouble, not what we do. Yes, we do things that are horrible all the time, and everyone knows it. But, it is the simple things that we say that will most often prove to be our undoing. Maybe it was just a little embellishment to make ourselves look better. Or, just a little white lie to make someone else look a little worse. Either way, both of those things often come back to bite us in the butt.
More important, though, is that we will all stand before the One True, Just and Holy GOD and give an account for everything we ever said. And, note the last verse, "For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned." I think I will just try to watch what I say because as good as Columbo was, he is nothing close to GOD.
Be Blessed,
Mickey T
