Christmas

It is the afternoon of Christmas day and I am starting to wind down. Actually, I may be worn out. It has been a really good weekend but busy. However, I am always grateful to be able to see my family.

It is always nice to get gifts, but more enjoyable to give them. I, as always, received far more than I deserved, or ever will for that matter. I am always humbled and utterly amazed at how nice folks are to me.

This year, the little one is fifteen months old so he was a little more able to rip open presents and really play with things. I can NEVER express how amazing it is to see a little one enjoy themselves at Christmas. I know I enjoy myself immensely.

Well, Christmas, that's what we're talking about. Christmas, the day we set aside to celebrate the birth of my SAVIOR, JESUS CHRIST. Yeah, I am not arguing birthday, etc. I said, we set aside the day to celebrate His birth; that is what Christmas is all about.

My SAVIOR was born. His birth gave me life; His life gives me strength; His death brought me salvation; His resurrection gives me hope; His ascension gives me an advocate with the Father and assurance that I will see my loved ones again. We will spend eternity with our loved ones with JESUS in Heaven. WOW! That is what Christmas is all about!

Yeah, all the stuff is good. But, NOTHING COMPARES TO THE SAVIOR! Merry CHRISTMAS!

This is not the day

Well, today is December 21st, 2012, the day many feared would be this world's last. They based their fears on an ancient Mayan calendar that someone interpreted today as the end. Allow me to day that this is not the day.

For the Mayans, the end of their civilization came. The problem was that the calendar maker missed the end of their society by about 500 years. I'm not a smart guy but I would have to say that that is a pretty substantial miss.

Why everyone worries about the end of the world, I do not know. We should each be concerned about the end of our own respective world. My world could end today: I could get killed in an auto accident or have a heart attack or a massive stroke or countless other things that could end my world today. Instead of being so concerned with the world's demise, we should be more concerned with making sure that we are ready if today is our day.

Today's word comes from Matthew 24:36, NIV, which reads, "No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father."

If the angels and JESUS don't know when the end of this world is coming, why would anyone think that a Mayan calendar maker would know? The Mayan calendar was made hundreds of years ago. Maybe the calendar maker got tired of making it. Maybe he retired. Maybe he passed on. Maybe he figured the calendar was hundreds of years advanced so why continue on. Regardless, the calendar maker had no idea when the end would come, and neither does anyone else.

We must live our lives as though today may be the end of the world. If not for everyone, for us. No one knows. Not the angels, not the Son, but the Father only. Don't fret about what everyone predicts. Give your life and your soul to JESUS and He'll take care of the travel plans.

One final note, I usually only do this on school days. However, I will post a couple of times each week for the next two weeks (the Christmas break).

You're not going to believe this

In our Youth Group discussion last night, we talked about Joseph and his part in the birth of our SAVIOR. We also had our annual Christmas party, which is a highlight of the year for me. I love Christmas and the fellowship and family time associated with it. I don't, however, lose sight of the true meaning of Christmas, the birth of the SAVIOR. The birth of JESUS epitomizes fellowship - it gave us the bridge necessary to fellowship eternally with our LORD.

Anyway, we were discussing Joesph and his part in GOD'S great plan. Can you imagine being told that your fiance, whom you have had no "relations" with, is pregnant? Obviously, it isn't yours. What are you going to do?

The willingness of the young Jewish girl, Mary, to be obedient to GOD'S will is astounding. But, can you imagine her telling her fiance, Joseph, what it is all about? I bet her explanation began with, "You are not going to believe this..."

I can only imagine the difficulty in believing the story; I am human. We know Mary was telling the truth, we know GOD'S plan, but Joseph had no idea at the time. One young man last night said, "Yeah, but it won't happen again so, if it is my fiance, I will know it's not true." My reply was, "Yeah, and for Joseph, it had never happened before so you could understand his apprehension."

Today's word is from Matthew 1:24, NIV, which reads, "When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the LORD commanded him and took Mary home as his wife."

It is hard to believe anything when someone starts with, "Hey, you're not going to believe this..." I have to admit that when someone starts a conversation with that phrase, I am usually thinking, "You are absolutely right." I also have to admit that there have been rare occurrences when it turned out true and I was embarrassed for not believing to begin with. Do you know when those times have happened? When the LORD has spoken to me through His Word, or a friend, or a message, or a song, or through a visual. He still does miracles. He still shows us things that are hard to believe. I want to be like Joseph and faithfully serve the LORD.

He's Waiting

For those of you who are parents, you know the feeling you get when you arrive home and your little run gets up/gets down from where he/she is and comes running towards you, arms outstretched. There is nothing like it.

When I arrive home and see our little one go "crazy" wanting me, it thrills my heart like no one can understand. WOW! Here is this little guy who thinks I am worth all this fuss. I won't tell him I'm not, he'll figure that out on his own in ten or so years. Or less. lol

To see him stand up from playing or to get down off the couch or chair and come running towards me saying, "DaDa," with his little arms outstretched speaks to me volumes of love that endless books could never describe. I cannot put into words the feelings it gives me; it is truly better felt than talked about.

Today's word comes from Luke 15:20b, NIV, which reads, "But while he was still a long ways off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him."

While I know this story is the opposite, the father runs to the son, I think it expresses the love I am trying to convey. However, as much as I love our little one, as much as he loves me, our love doesn't come close to the love GOD has for each of us.

You may be wandering in the desert. You may have lost your direction. You may be wondering if anyone loves you. If you will just decide to go to the Father, He will come running to you. He is longingly waiting for your return to Him. There is nothing that will ever fill that gaping hole of love in your heart besides the love of the Father. Go to Him. He'll come running!

Some things you should never do

There are things in this world that you should just never do. Ever. I am sure that we know the old Jim Croce song that says that you don't tug on Superman's cape, you don't spit into the wind, you don't pull the mask off the ol Lone Ranger, and you don't mess around with Jim. Yeah, there are things you should never do.

I think of other things that we should never do like never trust everything you hear; there are some folks out there that would rather climb a tree and lie to you than stand on flat ground and tell you the truth. These folks write for magazines that you can purchase at the checkout aisles in grocery stores.

Today's word is a quote from Will Rogers that says, "Never slap a man who is chewing tobacco."

There are so many things that we should never do. We shouldn't play in busy streets. We shouldn't exceed the speed limit. We shouldn't drive without wearing our seat belts. We shouldn't be mean and hateful to others. Lots of things that we shouldn't do.

However, the most important thing that we should NEVER do is expect that we can get to Heaven any way except through JESUS CHRIST. If you, or anyone you know is trying to get there any other way, that is something you shouldn't be doing. There is only one way to spend eternity in Heaven and that is by grace through faith in CHRIST JESUS.

Don't do things you shouldn't do. On the other hand, always do those things you should. Why not start with accepting the greatest gift ever given - salvation through JESUS!

Such Pain

I write this morning heavyhearted, as so many in our country is today. I cannot fathom the evil required to perpetrate the events of last Friday. Many ask, "How can someone be that evil?" I have no answer to that. I really don't know how anyone can be that evil.

Well, actually, I do. satan plays a large part in that kind of evil. There is no way a rational individual could ever comprehend doing something so heinous. satan is looking for folks who will allow him to lead them down the paths of destruction. I will say it again, satan will take you farther than you want to go and leave you to die in the gutter. DON'T GO!

My heart breaks for the loved ones who lost their innocent family members and friends to a evil sadistic demon possessed individual. There are no words to comfort or heal. There is nothing that can be said or done to lessen the pain. I just pray that GOD will comfort them as only He can.

Today's word comes from Proverbs 14:32, KJV, which reads, "When calamity comes, the wicked are brought down, but even in death the righteous have a refuge."

I don't know what to say. I don't know how a parent or loved one recovers from this kind of tragedy. What I do know is that GOD is our Comfort and He will see us through. Calamity came to so many on Friday. But, we can rest assured that the wicked will be brought down. We can be equally sure that those innocent children are safe in JESUS' presence.

May GOD deliver His peace and comfort as only He can.

Leaving it behind

You know what someone leaves behind when they pass from this life into eternity? Everything. We aren't taking anything with us. Everything we have in this world is temporary; GOD has allowed us to use it while we are here.

So many of us seem to want to try to amass some sort of ambiguous fortune. We aren't sure of the exact amount or the exact contents or even to what extent we are vying. We just know that we are supposed to do something and leave something behind.

I will not deny that I want to leave something besides all the payment books and debts that we have amassed. I would like for my family to be secure when GOD calls me to my eternal abode. But, there has to be something more...

Today's word comes from Proverbs 13:22, NIV, which reads, "A good person leaves an inheritance for their children's children, but a sinner's wealth is stored up for the righteous."

I think the "good person's inheritance" is far more than the monetary amount left behind. I think it encompasses all the wisdom and the examples they leave behind. Yes, I want to ensure my families financial future should something happen to me. But, more important, I want to leave a legacy of living a life for CHRIST and speaking wisdom.

Simple Folks

We studied the Christmas story with our youth last night. We are quickly approaching the Christmas holiday and we wanted to take the opportunity to remind them of what Christmas is truly all about. The presents are nice; I like them myself. The food is wonderful; I don't need any excuse to eat. The festivities are exciting; I love getting together with others. However, Christmas isn't about stuff, it's about our SAVIOR.

Anyway, we were discussing the Christmas story and we came upon the passage where the angel Gabriel visited the virgin Mary and told her that she would conceive and bring forth the SAVIOR, JESUS. Scholars believe that Mary was a young teenager, probably 14 or 15 when JESUS was born. She was a complete nobody as far as the world was concerned.

Mary, Joseph and all the others involved in the birth of our SAVIOR were simple folks, complete nobodies. Yet, GOD used these simple folks to bring about the greatest miracle and to deliver the most precious gift, salvation, to His children. WOW!

You, like so many others and me, may wonder at times why GOD would choose to work His greatest miracle through such simple folks. We may wonder why He would choose to involve us in His mission. I am humbled and amazed that He could find something for someone like me to do. Why?

Today's word comes from Luke 1:30, NIV, which reads, "But the angel said to her, 'Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with GOD."

GOD used Mary because she was humble, obedient and willing to be used for His will. GOD will use us, too, if we will humbly submit and be obedient to Him.

Yes, GOD uses simple folks. I pray that He will find a use for me.

Yep, I'm her idiot

Anyone who knows my wife and me has, no doubt, thought, "I don't know what that girl sees in him." I have to admit that I have thought that same thing, myself. I am far from perfect, though I don't like admitting it. I am probably below average in most categories, except annoyances and stupidity.

I am sure there have been times that I have done something and my wife has thought, "What an idiot!" I am equally sure, though, that her next thought was, "Yeah, but he is my idiot!" There is so much to be sad for being her idiot.

My wife probably could have found someone with less impetuously infantile tendencies. However, she would have never have had the laughs that my spur of the moment decisions have provided her. I can guarantee that she NEVER would have found anyone who loves her more than I. EVER!

Okay, so I am FAR from perfect. Easy on the far if you are reading this. lol I have some room for improvement. I have some opportunity to better myself. I guess you can say that my opportunity for improvement is endless. Yet, my wife loves me despite all that. Ever wonder why?

Today's word is a quote from Jodi Picoult, author of My Sister's Keeper, which says, "You don't love someone because they're perfect, you love then in spite of the fact that they're not."

It is easy to love folks who are easy to love. It is more loving to love those who are not perfect, such as me. If the requirement for love was perfection, few of us (wink, wink) could ever be loved. I know how blessed I am to have someone love me despite my imperfections. Look, no one is perfect but everyone deserves love.

We are not alone

I was sharing with a friend recently that no one kicks you when you are down like family. Family, the ones that are supposed to be the most supportive and the most understanding, are the ones that will rub salt in the wound quicker than anyone else. I wish I could explain why but I really can't.

There will be times in our lives (maybe not in yours but they have been numerous in mine) that we are going to fail and fall flat on our faces. There have been times that I have really disappointed folks, but I have never disappointed anyone as much as I have disappointed myself. It is at these times that I need someone to come along and say, "Hey, you really messed that up but I still love you and everything is going to be alright." More often than not, though, someone usually comes along and says, "Hey, you really messed that up. I am so glad I am not you. I can't wait to post this to facebook. WOW! You are such a doofus!"

Yes, we all make mistakes and we all need some support and help when things fall apart. Often, that help isn't found in our closest relationships, which is unfortunate for us all. As I told my friend, though, GOD knows we mess up but He loves us anyway. He knows the pain and the hurt that we are feeling. He knows the burdens that we are bearing. He loves us despite our shortcomings and will see us through our most trying times. We just have to rely on Him.

Today's word comes from Psalm 22:24, NIV, which reads, "For He has not despised or scorned the suffering of the afflicted one; He has not hidden His face from him but has listened to his cry for help."

GOD has not and will not leave us in our lowest moments. He hears our cries and works things for our good.  Now, He never intends for us to sin, and certainly doesn't want us to go around failing. However, when we do fail and falter, He isn't standing there saying, "WOW! You really blew that!" No, our Heavenly Father is listening to our cries and patting us on the back and soothingly saying, "I know this looks really bad but we will work through this together."

Listen. Learn. Apply

This weekend, I sat down and watched what I could of one of the best football games of the year. The two teams consisted of young men that played for the love of the game. They played for the competition. They played for the pride of their university, and their country. Saturday the 113th meeting of Army versus Navy took place.

Navy has had a decade of dominance; they had won ten in a row heading into Saturday's matchup. Army hadn't had a particularly good season, entering the game with a record of two wins and nine losses. Navy, on the other hand, had had a decent season, entering the game with seven wins and four losses. However, the game was ultra competitive from start to finish. We'll just cut to the chase...

With just over a minute left to play and Navy leading 17 - 13, Army's quarterback, Trent Steelman, handed off to running back Larry Dixon inside the Navy twenty yard line. Something went wrong with the exchange and a fumble resulted. Navy recovered the fumble and Army lost for the eleventh consecutive year.

Trent Steelman is a four year starter at quarterback for the Army Black Knights. He has been the starting quarterback for four consecutive losses to the Navy Midshipmen. He could see victory just a few yards away; he could sense the chance to get the proverbial "monkey" off his back. He could see the chance to beat a rival in his last collegiate game. However, it was not to be.

I felt for Trent Steelman. On the sideline, after the game, during the singing of the Alma Maters, he was inconsolable. Who can blame him? When you put your heart and soul into something like that, when you give everything you have to accomplish your goal, when you try with all your might and come up short, it is devastatingly heartbreaking. Some may say, "Well, here's a young man that may lead our troops into battle and he is crying on the sideline." I say, "Show me someone without passion and feeling and determination, and I will show you someone I don't want leading our troops." Trent Steelman is a real man.

Today's word comes from Proverbs 23:12, NIV, which reads, "Apply your heart to instruction and your ears to words of knowledge."

Trent Steelman will be a great leader of men because he has been through adversity and learned from it. He will use the lessons he has learned on and off the field to be a better person out in the world. While Saturday was full of disappointment for young Trent Steelman, he has a solid future ahead. Yes, disappointment will come, but don't miss the lesson. By the way, with no disrespect intended, GO NAVY!

Ouch! That hurts!

We have reached the time of year when the trees lose their leaves, the sap has receded and it is time to break out the pruning shears. We lop limbs that aren't necessary in order for the others to acquire what is needed to produce fruit.

It takes some work and effort to prune trees. One must be sure of which limbs to remove and which to leave. We must be sure not to do too much but to be sure to do enough. We have to be sure that what we do is a benefit and not a detriment to productive growth.

Much like pruning trees in the fall and winter, it is necessary for GOD, at times, to prune the dead and unneeded growth from us. As we progress through life, we often grow things that are completely and totally unnecessary. In order for us to be productive and grow the fruit that we need to bear, GOD has to step in and do some pruning.

The pruning process is painful; no on likes having a limb cut off. GOD, I would venture to say, takes no pleasure in lopping us but He knows it is absolutely necessary; He must remove what is not necessary in order for the other parts to acquire what is needed to produce fruit.

Today's word is a really simple quote from John Henry Newman, which says, "Growth is the only evidence of life."

While the pruning process is a painful it is absolutely necessary to prepare for growth. I can say without a doubt that there have been some things that GOD had to prune from me; I wasn't giving them up freely, and they were certainly hampering growth. In due time, however, I have seen the need for the pruning and the resultant growth. GOD still has a lot of pruning to do on me but I am striving daily to grow into the productive branch that He desires.

Putting out fires

Anyone who knows me would probably say that I talk - A LOT. I like talking. There is nothing wrong with silence; I just can't seem to find a comfort in it. I figure the only way I am ever going to learn something from someone is to hear it from them. Often, my talking is just questioning.

On a similar note, I would like to think that most folks, while they would agree that I am a talker, would probably also say that I am not a gossiper. Yes, it is interesting to learn about some of the things that folks do and, then, try to figure out why they would do something like that. But, I am not one to go around sharing what I know about others to others.

Today's word comes from Proverbs 26:20 & 21, NIV, which reads, "Without wood a fire goes out; without a gossip a quarrel dies down. As charcoal to embers and wood to fire, so is a quarrelsome person for kindling strife."

It is impossible for a fire to continue without the fuel, the wood, to keep it going. So, too, is gossip. Gossip will die if just one person refuses to send it on, if one person will not put their "log" on it. It is challenging to not "share" such news with others but wouldn't we want others to stop our "fires" if they had the chance?

Gossip is interesting sometimes. Gossip is funny sometimes. Gossip is abundant sometimes. Gossip can be hurtful sometimes. Putting out fires may be challenging but always worth it. Let's put out some fires.

Free Rides

If there is anything to learn from working with youth, it is that they are not that much different than I was at their age. Don't tell them that; they think we older folks are dumb as a bag of hammers (we thought that about older folks, too. See, we are so much alike).

One of the things that I hear so many youth say is, "When I turn 18, I am going to move out of my house and do what I want to do..." Man, when I hear this I try to give them a dose of reality. When you turn 18, it is not that the government or someone gives you a stipend in order for you to get a place to live, something to drive, utilities, etc. Nor is there any guarantee that you will get a job that will support the lifestyle that you envision.

I often ask them if they know how much their parents spend each month for rent/mortgage, utilities, car payments, insurance, groceries, etc. They are astounded when I do the math for them. It all comes down to the simplest thing - everything takes time, and hard work.

Today's word is an anonymous quote that says, "Some people dream of success while others wake up and work hard at it."

I want our youth to understand that they can be anything they want to be. However, no one owes it to you. No one is going to give it to you. If you are willing to apply yourself and work hard everyday, you will be surprised at what just may come your way.

No, there are no free rides. But, with patience, diligence and some hard work, maybe we can find a way to buy a ticket.

Singing

While most men might be a little apprehensive in admitting this, I have no reservations with sharing my dirty little secrets. In high school, I was in the choir. Not only was I in the choir, I was in the show choir; you know, singing and dancing. I have often looked back and really felt for those unfortunate members who had to see my coordination challenges.

I have sung my whole life. I come from a family of singers. We have always expressed ourselves through song from my earliest remembrances. When folks in my family are happy, they sing. When they are sad, they sing. When they are bored, they sing. This probably isn't pleasant for all those around us but it is what we do. We love to sing.

Today's word comes from James 5:13, NIV, which reads, "Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise!" (James 5:13, NIV)

We have so much to sing about! Yes, this world is a mess. Yes, there are things going on that can be really depressing. Yes, I have my cares, concerns and conflicts, too. But, GOD is sooooo good! There is so much to sing about.

Hey, if I am around you and you hear me singing, I know it may not be a pleasantry for you but, trust me, I am happy. If you're happy and you know it, SING!

It's only temporary

I, once again, am your typical male. I do typical male things; I act like a typical male; I am sure I probably talk like a typical male. While that may not be the greatest thing in the world, it is what it is. I can be very nurturing and caring but I am often seen as stoic and uncaring. I don't show emotions very well, which causes others to think I am unconcerned, when in fact I am deeply concerned.

However, I am one that tries to not lose sight of the big picture. I realize that what is happening right now at this very moment is serious, trying, tiring and troubling. On the other hand, I often step back and ask myself if what is going on will really matter in ten years, ten months, ten weeks, ten days, ten hours? If I find that it really won't matter, I usually just let it go. I don't worry about things I can't control.

I think we often get lost in the moment and feel that there is no way to fix the mess we have made. If you haven't been there, give it time. I have made mistakes that I thought would NEVER be fixable but, looking back on them now, I realize that they were only temporary problems.

Today's word is part anonymous quote and part my rendering: "Life is full of temporary situations; don't try to find permanent solutions to those temporary things."

So many of us have made some really bad rash decisions based on something that is happening at the moment. I think we need to step back, take a deep breath, get a glimpse of the big picture and, then, ask GOD to help us make the right decision. It is far more important to make the correct decision than to make a quick decision.

Yes, I may seem to be the typical male, uncaring and unconcerned. But, I promise you, when I am quite, the wheels are turning. I pray that I have them moving in the right direction. Life is going to give you temporary problems, solve them with prayer and discernment.

Moving Mountains

We all have things that seem to arise from time to time determined to hamper our progress. Let's call these mountains. Yes, we do have a tendency to make mountains out of molehills, but, sometimes, there are mountains that arise.

Allow me, if you will, to digress for just a second about mountains and molehills, then, we will get back to this. Mountains compared to molehills are like comparing problems and inconveniences. If you want filet mignon and all you have is ground round, that is an inconvenience. On the other hand, if you have absolutely nothing to eat, that is a problem. I try to keep that in mind when I am looking at mountains and molehills. Back to today's thought...

We all have things that arise, mountains, that get in the way. We try everything within our human realm to get that mountain out of the way but it won't budge. The big thing we try is to just lay our shoulder into it and shove; that NEVER works. In order to move a mountain, we must start by removing one stone, one shovel, one handful at a time. Let's look at what JESUS said about moving mountains.

Today's word comes from Matthew 17:20, NIV, which reads, "...If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you."

Whatever your mountain is, whether it is illness or addiction or finances or whatever, JESUS is standing by patiently waiting for us to take that first step of faith. We may have to really dig in and work our tails off one handful at a time but JESUS is faithful and will help us to move that mountain.

We can shove all we want with our human strength and be repeatedly defeated. Or, we can faithfully believe that JESUS has our back and, in due time, HE will move that mountain.

Mercy

I was sharing with some of the teachers at daycare this morning about my propensity to get into trouble while growing up. It's not that I was a bad kid (I guess that would depend upon whom you ask) but I was just a little mischievous, and always into something.

I shared with these ladies and the children that were present that if you had grown up in my neighborhood you would have known my full name. There were many times my Mom stood on our front porch and yelled my full name. I would turn to whomever I was "mischievizing" with and say, "I've got to go." Upon my arrival at home, I often received some encouragement to change my ways.

Yes, I received quite a few whippings and whoopings (those who have received a whooping know the difference). However, there were times when I didn't receive the whooping I deserved. I shared with them this morning that I never got a whooping I didn't deserve but I didn't get a few that I did.

Today's word comes from Luke 6:36, NIV, which reads, "Be merciful, just as you Father is merciful."

My parents showed me mercy by not giving me what I deserved. GOD, too, has been so merciful by not giving me the punishment I deserve. JESUS CHRIST died for my sins, paid the price I could not pay so that I would not have to receive what my sinful self deserves. GOD'S wonderful saving grace and His ever enduring mercy is unfathomable. If GOD can show mercy to me, who is so undeserving, why can't I show a little mercy to others?

That doesn't mean that you shouldn't discipline your children; if they are anything like me, they NEED it! What it does mean is that we should temper what we do with mercy, for GOD is merciful toward us.

So Tempting

I don't know about you but I have those things that really tempt me. I heard a man, standing in the pulpit, once say, "I am above temptation." He is a liar. Nobody is above temptation.

There is no sin in temptation, the sin comes when we give in to that temptation. We have covered this before but I just wanted to emphasize that that guy was a liar, and we are all tempted from time to time.

With that being said, I have also heard folks say, "Well, if GOD knew how hard this is for me." He does. There is nothing you can go through, no challenge you can face, no temptation you can fight that JESUS didn't face.

Today's Word comes from Hebrews 4:15, North American Standard Bible, which reads, "For we do not have a High Priest Who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One Who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin."

Yes, JESUS knows what we are going through. He knows how difficult it is. He knows the struggles just to keep trying to keep trying. Satan unleashed everything he had in his arsenal, yet JESUS sinned not. He knows what temptation is; He knows the temptations we fight; He can help us stand strong in the face of those temptations.

Temptations will come; we will ALL face them. If you aren't facing temptation, you aren't living for JESUS; satan has no reason to tempt his own. When the temptations come, rest assured that JESUS knows what you are going through and, if we will ask for His help, He will help us to overcome.

Just a little faith

Alright, I am about to reveal something that is extremely painful and, yet, completely necessary. I DO NOT have it all together. I know many of you are probably thinking, "And, this is a surprise to whom?" Well, it isn't a surprise to me but it is hard to admit our shortcomings.

I have a wife and young child. We have a mortgage, two vehicle payments, utilities, groceries, etc., just as most of you. Well, especially in the current economic conditions, I have my moments when I am concerned about keeping my job and being able to provide. You been there?

The feeling, the concern of being able to provide is probably one that most of us have, or will have. However, this morning, while getting ready to come to my job, which I am so grateful for, a little voice inside my head said, "What is your faith in? Is your faith in your company? The economy? The government?" WOW! Talk about a kick in the gut.

My faith is in JESUS CHRIST, and HE will provide all my needs. Today's word comes Philippians 4:19, English Standard Version, which reads, "And my GOD will supply every need of yours according to His riches in glory in CHRIST JESUS."

Yeah, things are tough right now. Yeah, sometimes, I have my concerns. Yeah, I know better. GOD has everything under control and He will supply ALL of our needs. What is your faith in? Mine is in JESUS CHRIST!

One single decision

It is amazing to me to see how easy I can fall into things. I mean, I can be going along really strong and determined and out of the blue, some kind of distraction will derail me. I won't go into any kind of details or examples but suffice it to say, I know how important it is to stay alert.

I remember a really good man that lived a devoted and dedicated life. He was a member of several civic organizations that did a lot of community good. He was part of an all volunteer group that would do things for others. He was in local politics, serving his constituents. He was a solid member of his church and his community. This particular individual did many things for many people.

However, he made a decision once to accept something that he was not allowed to accept. Because of that decision, he was sentenced to a prison term. More important, though, his character was questioned. Was he really the man that he had been for those seventy years or was he really just the man that made that one decision?

Today's word is an unattributed quote that says, "Character is made by many acts; it can be lost by a single one."

It doesn't take but one single decision to ruin years of character building. I really try to always be conscious of this. I pray that you do, too.

Thinkful

I am starting today's post with today's word, which is an unattributed quote, which reads, "In the old Anglo-Saxon, to be "thankful" meant to be "thinkful". Thinking of our blessings should stir our gratitude."

It doesn't take long to sit here and think of some of the many blessings in my life. However, there is not enough time left in my life to give thanks for ALL the blessings I have received; there have been, are, and will be so many.

It is a shame, however, that I can be less than thankful for the things I have been blessed with. There is a line in the song "Lucky Man" sung by Montgomery Gentry that goes, "I look around at what everyone has and I forget about all I've got." I think we all suffer from that from time to time.

I have so much to be thankful for. I have the greatest wife and family you could ever want. My parents are here and doing well. They have each had significant health problems but GOD still has them here. All my siblings are still here and doing alright. My wife's family is all still here and doing alright. I have health, a home, something to eat, a job I like, folks that love me and that I love. And, when this life is over, it only gets better; I am going to spend eternity in Heaven with my SAVIOR, JESUS CHRIST! WOW!

When we sit down to partake of the Thanksgiving meal tomorrow, I am going to be thinkful of all that GOD has given me; those thoughts will lead me to be truly THANKFUL! HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Thanks

"Thanks," such a simple and pleasant word, yet, so often neglected. I can think of times in my life when others made sacrifices and went out of their way for me and I failed to say, "Thanks."

The world in which we live has bred an attitude of entitlement and greed; we, for some strange reason, think others owe us something just because we are here. Allow me to say that no one owes me anything other than the respect that I give. How often, though, that others have done great and wonderful and extremely nice things for me that I failed to give thanks for.

On the other hand, there have been times when people have wronged me and I have bent over backwards, walked miles, did everything in my power to try and "even the score." It is a sad commentary that I would expend such great effort on those things and not take the mere seconds it takes to say, "Thanks." As I sit here typing this, I am saddened by my own failures.

Today's word is a quote form John E. Southard that says, "The only people with whom you should try to get even are those who have helped you."

I am going to work harder at letting the bad things go and taking the time to say, "Thanks," to all those who have helped so much. If I have failed to say, "Thanks," to anyone that may be reading this, please forgive me. Your acts of kindness have meant more to me than I could ever express! Let's let the mean acts go and focus on saying, "Thanks," to those who treat us so kindly.

Mussels

I do not like seafood or fish. I have tried about every variety but cannot find a taste for any of it. I know, I just haven't had it fixed correctly, and you may be right. However, I have tried all the different fishes and all the different styles and I can't find a way to like it.

Now, allow me to say that I have tried the coconut battered shrimp and thought it was edible. I also had some West Indies salad once that I found not bad. But, other than those two occasions, I have not found the taste for fish or seafood.

A few years back, at a conference, we were having dinner at a "seafood" restaurant. I can always finds something to eat regardless of the venue; almost every seafood restaurant serves steak and chicken. The group I was with ordered some appetizers, all seafood related. One of the appetizers was steamed mussels.

I don't know if you have ever tried steamed mussels but I hadn't. When I tell you I don't like seafood and fish, it is because I have tried it. So, they finally talked me into trying one of the mussels. You know how they did it. They all raved about how great it was, how the butter sauce was out of this world, how the taste was to die for. Well, I tried the mussel - FIVE TIMES!

No, I didn't eat five mussels, I ate the same mussel five times. I tried to swallow it but it kept coming back. I don't know how anyone eats mussels, or seafood or fish for that matter. While everyone at the table got a "kick" out of my attempt to try such a "wonderful dish", I know that mussels aren't for me. On the other hand, while I may not like fish and seafood, many others enjoy them very much.

Today's word comes from 1 Timothy 4:4, NIV, which reads, "For everything GOD created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving."

GOD created fish and seafood; we should all be thankful. For those who enjoy those tastes, you should be thankful that GOD created such wonderful foods. For those of us who do not enjoy those tastes, we are thankful that GOD created such a variety of foods.

Stupidity and Genius

There are a lot of stupid things in this world. A LOT! To try and list them all would take volumes that have yet to be determined, trees that could not be numbered, and time that could not be measured. Plus, to try to list all the stupid things in this world would be, well, stupid.

My mind is on stupid things today because I have done several in my life. And, when I say, "Several," I am sure you can add "thousand". I like the old saying that I may be dumb but I ain't stupid. I explain it to folks by saying that I have hit my thumb with a hammer but, after striking my thumb with the hammer, I have NEVER drawn back and done it a second time with a consecutive swing. Yeah, I am smart enough to stop after one.

One of my favorite shows on television is "World's Dumbest..." I cannot imagine doing some of the things that some of these people do. I pray that I have enough common sense to know that I can't skate off a rooftop and land on my feet. I can't even skate on level ground and stay on my feet. I pray that I always have enough sense to know that I might be able to get a motorcycle to soar 200 feet through the air but it still has to land, and the landing is where the problem could arise. Yeah, there is a lot of stupid stuff out there.

Today's word is a quote from Albert Einstein, which says, "The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits."

We can only be "so" smart. No matter how much we study, no matte how many courses we take, no matter how many foreign languages we learn, no matter how many years of instruction we receive, we have a limit to our genius. However, stupidity has no limits; we see examples of this everyday.

I will end today by quoting Clint Eastwood - "A man's gotta know his limitations." Yes, we are limited in our genius but not our stupidity. Remember, it is okay to be ignorant but don't be STUPID!

Running on Empty

Years ago, when I was just a young man starting out with a wife and a mortgage and not much money (because of the mortgage, not because of my wife), the fuel gauge was showing "E" and payday was tomorrow. As I was about to pass the gas station, I knew I needed to stop but I only had $3 and, once again, tomorrow was payday.

We only lived two miles from work and I figured that I probably had enough fuel to get home and two miles back to work and, then, the mile back to this service station. I mean, we were only talking two start ups and three miles. Plus, I really wanted to keep the $3 in case I wanted a honey bun and a cola.

I guess you know what happened. However, it didn't happen as you may think. As I turned in beside the gas station on my way home, the car started to spit and sputter. I thought, "Well, it is probably just sloshing up away from the fuel pump. Once I get straightened out, it should run fine." That was not the case.

As I tried to continue on, the car completely died. I came to a stop, got out, and pushed the car back to the service station, where I put the entire $3 in the fuel tank.

I think we run our lives much as I ran that car. We are constantly going and doing and striving to fit twenty-six hours in our twenty-four hour day. We try to squeeze every ounce of fuel out of our day. While that may work for a while, eventually, we are going to run out of gas.

Today's word comes from Mark 6:31, using the North American Standard Bible, which reads, "And He said unto them, 'Come away by yourselves to a secluded place and rest a while..."

The disciples, along with JESUS, were being constantly pressed by the crowds and didn't even have time to eat. JESUS finally told them that they needed to get away from all the hustle and bustle and REST a while. I think that is good advice for us in the world in which we live. We need to take the time to rest and relax and unwind. If not, we may just find ourselves running on empty.

Given or Gotten?

Approaching this time of year when we take a breath and reflect on the goodness and graciousness of GOD, always leads me to think about "Black Friday" and the those who try to "beat everyone else to the punch". I have no desire to be a part of "Black Friday" shopping. As a matter of fact, I try to not go ANYWHERE the day after Thanksgiving.

It is sad to me that the day after we sit down with loved ones and thank GOD for His wondrous provision, many will go out and "fight", sometimes literally, to get this unbelievable bargain. There is absolutely nothing wrong with going shopping, and certainly nothing wrong with getting the best deal and being good stewards of what we have been given. However, it is all about the motivation.

I see people out there during the shopping season that are stressed out and frustrated and panicked and tense trying to make sure they "outdo" everyone else. It is a sad testament that the season we should sit back and reflect on the Greatest Gift ever given is more about how much I can get.

Today's word is a quote from George Sweeting that goes, "When we come to the end of life, the question will be, 'How much have you given?', not, "How much have you gotten?"

It is most important to keep things in perspective. If we are out shopping to give to someone that is one thing. If we are out shopping to "outdo", to "get more" than someone else, we really need to check that motivation. Life truly is more about what we give than what we get. The Only exception is that of salvation through JESUS CHRIST.

Once we receive the Greatest Gift, though, we must try to give it away. Why would you want to keep the Greatest Thing anyone could ever receive? When GOD asks me what I have given, I pray to reply that I shared the Gospel with all. It is more blessed to give than receive. Keep sharing the Greatest Gift!

All for the asking

There is a church message board sign between work and home that has read for the last couple of weeks, "You cannot live wrong and die right". There is certainly a lot of truth in that statement.

So many of us Christians tend to use our salvation as a "get out of jail free card". We tend to think that since we are saved, we can do virtually anything and not have to worry about it. I will say that once we are saved, there is nothing that can take our salvation. However, there is so much that can, and will, steal our witness and effectiveness.

Paul told the Galatians that they were using their liberty to justify sinning, and it ought not to be so. Listen, I am not coming down on anyone, I have my own numerous faults and failures. What I do know, though, is that I cannot continue doing something I know is wrong and die completely right. While I won't lose my salvation, I don't want to face the One Holy and Just GOD in that sinful state.

We ALL sin and come short of the glory of GOD. But, we shouldn't continue doing the same sinning and falling short of the glory of GOD. The message board is correct. You cannot live wrong and die right. However, if we will confess our sins, GOD is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from ALL unrighteousness.

So, how are you living?  If you're not living right, GOD will forgive you and get you back on the path HE has for you. All you have to do is ask.

Highest Honor

We are on the precipice of Veterans Day. As a matter of fact, we will have a three day weekend because of the Veterans Day holiday. Schools will not be in session, government offices will be closed, there will be parades and dedications. I pray that we never forget the sacrifices made by so many to grant us the precious freedoms we enjoy.

I have done a lot of stupid things in my life. I have done some things that, looking back, I might have done differently. However, being a veteran is something that gives me a humble pride. I am forever grateful to live in the greatest country in the world, and to have served to protect its greatness.

My service pales in comparison with so many others that gave some and will never compare to those who gave all. I am humbled to sit here and talk about those heroes who thought enough of this country and of me to protect us. Once again, I pray I never forget their great sacrifices.

Today's word is a quote from Gary Hart that says, "I think there is one higher office than the president and I would call that patriot."

I shared with a Sunday school class once that you don't have to be a Christian to be a patriot, but, if you are a Christian, you should be a patriot. Friends in low places

I have to admit that I like all kinds of music. I am a product of Pops, who loves old country (Hank Snow, Charlie Pride, Jim Reeves, Marty Robins, Johnny Horton, etc.), Mom, who got into early rock (Elvis, Paul Revere and the Raiders, The Four Freshmen, etc.), and eighties "big hair" bands (Bon Jovi, Def Leperd, Ratt, Poison, etc.).

Today, I listen to all genres of music. While my favorite is contemporary Christian, I still like country and rock and classic rock and the old hymns. I like most all music. I did say most. I am a "words" man, and if the words are vulgar or nasty or inconsiderate, I am not going to listen to it, and you should be ashamed to also.

Anyway, there is a country song that Garth Brooks had a HUGE hit with that has led me to the thought for today. Today's word is a quote from Bob Marley, which reads, "The truth is, everyone is going to hurt you. You just got to find the ones worth suffering for."

The song I had in mind this morning is "Friends in low places". I know. I know. It is not a nice song, and it certainly has negative aspects that I don't approve of, but please allow me to explain. Thank you.

I have my moments when things go about as wrong as they can. I mean, I am about as low as you can get. It is that point that I would have to get a really tall ladder just to reach the bottom. When I find myself in these low places, it never fails that I have friends that will comfort me and help to see me through.

No matter how bad things seem to be going, I always seem to have friends that will crawl down in the mire with me. They will sit in the pit with me and comfort me. Yes, I have friends in low places. I pray they know that they do, too.

I've fallen, now what?

I had a span several years ago where I was having great difficulties walking and standing. I would walk into doorways, or doorjambs rather. I would miss the opening by two or three feet sometimes. I would also be walking down the hall or across the floor and just trip over thin air and fall. It had us quite concerned.

With all this going on, I went to several doctors. Each thought it was this or it was that. They would prescribe  certain medications that didn't help at all and I would continue to find myself walking into walls and tripping over invisible obstacles.

I went to one particular specialist that told me it was all in my head; that there really wasn't anything happening but an overly active imagination. Well, I do have quite the imagination but I could always differentiate between the doorway and the doorjamb.

I finally went to a doctor that did a couple of simple tests and said, "Your problem is that you have fluid trapped between your ear drum and your inner ear. Your Eustachian tube is not draining properly." He prescribed a fluid pill and a pill for motion sickness which allowed me to walk across the floor and through doorways.

Today's word comes from Proverbs 24:16, NIV, which reads, "...though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again..."

We're all going to fall; we are all going to get knocked down from time to time. However, we are not defined by how many times we fall. What defines us is how many times we get back up. In order to be a success, you just have to get up one more time than you fall. Keep getting up!

Listening

Today is election day here in America. We have had incessant talk from the two major candidates about how good/bad the economy is doing; how much/little has changed in the last four years; how great/sorry a job has been done; how great/sorry a job the other will do. How do you know what to believe?

I have always lived by the philosophy that you believe half of what you see and a fourth of what you hear. However, when it comes to politics, I think that may really be stretching it. I have a tendency to believe that the only true thing any lifetime politician ever says is, "I want your vote."

With all that being said, however, today is the day that we go to the polls and elect the person that we believe will be the best choice to lead our country for the next four years. Another quick "pearl of wisdom" for you - this year, as with most, we have the task of voting for the "least evil of the two lessers."

So, how do we decide? I am glad you asked...today's word comes from Psalm 143:10, NIV, which reads, "Teach me to do Your will, for You are my GOD; may Your good Spirit lead me..."

There is only one source of truth, and that is GOD. If we will ask Him to lead us in our decisions, He will; even the decision of whom to vote for this election day. We must choose to let Him lead us, then, we must act upon His leading; GOD will NEVER lead us wrong.

Today, we get to take part in one of the greatest privileges bestowed upon Americans. We get to go to the polls and civilly/safely/peacefully elect the President of the United States. Don't ever take the sacrifices that allow us this privilege for granted. Allow GOD to teach you to do His will, to lead you in ever aspect of life. And, GO VOTE!

Even when you don't feel like it

We often hear the word "respect" used in so many different conversations; everyone is looking for it, everyone is demanding, everyone is conscious of it but I wonder how many really know what it is. Respect. Seems like such a simple word.

According to urbandictionary.com, respect is "valuing each others point of views, being open to being wrong, accepting people the way they are (warts and all; we all have our limitations)".

It so often seems that we want everyone to accept and respect us for the individual that we are but we seem less accepting and less respectful to others. Don't get me wrong, we should point out when others have offended or erred but we are to do it respectfully.

Today's word is a quote from Steven Hall that says, "The truest form of love is how you behave toward someone, not how you feel about them."

Yes, we do love each other; I mean, we "say" it all the time. But, actions speak louder than words, right? A better reflection of our love toward someone is how we treat them, even when no one else is around. You can tell me you love me but it is so much easier to see than to hear.

Respecting someone even when you don't feel like it, that is a true testament to love.

Belonging

When you unite something, you put things together to form a single unit. I think of uniting a man and woman in holy matrimony; they are no longer two individuals but one unit. As a matter of fact, the Bible tells us that they become one.

I love when people talk about marriage being a 50 - 50, equal relationship. I can tell you that that is impossible and will never work. The math is correct, the two equal 100%, but the percentages are wrong. Marriage is not a 50 - 50 relationship; marriage is a 60 - 40 relationship.

Now, before you get crazy trying to brand me as chauvinistic or mad or imbecilic, allow me to explain. Marriage is 60 - 40; sometimes, I am 60, and, sometimes, I am 40. There are times when my wife needs more and I have to give more, thus making me the 60. There are also just as many times that I need more, and my wife has to give more, making her the 60 and me the 40. However, in the end, we are ONE.

Alot to be said about uniting things. Today's word comes from 1 Corinthians 6:17, NIV, which reads, "But whoever is united with the LORD is one with Him in spirit."

No, we are not GOD. And, no, we are not gods. But, when we unite with GOD, His Spirit will communicate and fellowship with our spirit. WOW!

I think the same is true with whatever you have your spirit united. The difference is that the other things cannot communicate and fellowship back, think talking to a rock. You may talk to the rock but it will NEVER talk to you. But, if we will unite with GOD, He will unite with us in spirit.

Masks

We just finished Halloween, which, if you read yesterday's post, I am a huge fan of. I like Halloween. I like seeing all the costumes and seeing the kids have fun and laugh. I am amazed at the opportunity to be a Christian witness on Halloween.

Thinking about the costumes, though, has led me to today's thought that we seem to want to hide behind our "masks". We all have things that we try to hid, things that we keep covered up. Now, don't get me wrong, I have things that will go to my grave with me, and for good reason. However, that is not what I am talking about.

We seem to want to hide anything that might be perceived as a weakness or as an offense in today's politically correct society. Once again, if you read yesterday's post, you know that there is a time, a season, a place for everything. But, I want folks to know that, with me, what you see is (unfortunately) what you get.

I try to emphasize that GOD has made each of us individually; we are all unique masterpieces. No two of us are exactly alike. Isn't that AMAZING? So, why do we try so hard to cover up who we truly are?

Well, today's word is a quote from Julia Shalom Jordan, which says, "Nobody likes a "Knock-off". Be TRUE to YOU."

There will always be people who do not like you or accept you regardless of what you try to be. So, why not just be YOU! Be the best you that you can be. You are exactly what GOD envisioned when He formed you. Now, you may have strayed from His plan and you may not be doing His will but you are His unique creation. BE YOU!

It's Time

It is Halloween! While some say that Halloween is the "devil's" holiday, I just see it as a day that kids dress up and go out and get candy. Man, I really like candy, especially Reese Cups! I won't go into the history of Halloween; you should look it up, though.

I find it strange how we can make anything and everything "bad". I remember as a young child that we would make our rounds through the neighborhood and "trick or treat" our way into a bunch of goodies. Mrs. Upton lived a couple of blocks from us and she always had homemade treats: cookies, popcorn balls, etc. Those homemade treats were some of the best.

We can't allow our kids to have the homemade treats anymore because, we don't know what someone may have done to them prior to handing the out. What an absolute shame. Once again, people can make anything "bad" if they want; Mrs. Upton's popcorn balls still hold a very fond place in my heart.

On this particular Halloween, I am also have a heavy heart for those that have been affected by Hurricane Sandy. I pray that GOD will give them the grace and strength and resources to persevere and see it through. I know that He will; we just have to keep holding them up, and they have to remain faithful.

With those thoughts on my mind today, today's word comes from parts of Ecclesiastes chapter 3, NIV, which I skipped around some to get this, "There is a time for everything...a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh..."

Today is Halloween! I can't wait to hand out candy to all the little ones dressed up as all sorts of cute and funny characters. I want them to know that it is okay for Christian's to have some fun. I also want them to know that we need to pray for those that have lost so much. Be careful tonight with your little ones. Pray for those that need our prayers. There is a time for everything.

Interests

I was driving along a busy highway yesterday, when about 100 feet ahead of me, I saw a man riding a bicycle take a fall. His front tire had fallen into one of the storm sewer gratings and tossed the rider over his handlebars onto the ground. It was rather scary to see this man fall, and the amount of traffic whizzing by made it that much more scary.

The traffic whizzing by is what really amazed me. When the man fell, I was probably fifteen or twenty cars from where he had fallen - not a one of those cars stopped, not a single one. As a matter of fact, I am not sure they even slowed down. They kept whizzing by while this man lay precariously close to speeding traffic.

I am sure that they had somewhere to be, probably work. I am sure that they had other things on their minds, probably work. But, goodness, this guy had fallen within mere inches of destruction and NO ONE was going to stop and check on him! Are we really that busy?

Sometimes, we are so distracted with ourselves that we can't seem to see the danger that someone else is in, or is headed for. If we, and I am talking to me, would just take a second and look around and see what is going on in others' lives, we could have a dramatic impact for GOD! Pray that I will notice others.

Not to say anything good for me but, yes, I stopped to check on the man. He was fine, a little bruised and sore but no worse for wear. He was riding his bike to work, it is his only means of transportation. We loaded his bike in the truck and went to his place of employment. I am interested in learning if this gentleman knows JESUS. If not, I pray that he may see Him through me.

Love Insurance

With Hurricane Sandy bearing down on the east coast, my thoughts and prayers are for those that may be in harms way, and for all the ones that will feel the effects of the storms wrath. I especially think of those who will try to get their lives, and, maybe their homes, back together afterwards. With these thoughts and prayers on my mind, I started thinking about insurance.

If you are like most folks, you are probably "insurance poor". We have a fair portion of our income go towards some form of insurance every month. I am grateful that my employer picks up a large portion of our health insurance but we still have pay a few amount of money for homeowners, life, auto, etc.

The thing about insurance that gets me is that they have "riders". The riders are there to provide extra protection, which is not included in the standard policy. That is to say that the standard policy has a lot of, "this is covered - unless this occurs," or "this isn't covered - unless this occurs," etc. It is kind of sad to me that there are so many loopholes in everything, and that we must have "riders", add-ons to ensure our protection.

I have also seen folks put "riders" on their love for others. They say, "Well, I'll love them if they will love me, or if they will do this, or if they don't do that, or..." It seems that we want everyone to be perfect in order for us to love them. Aren't you glad that that is not a requirement for GOD to love us?

Today's word comes from Romans 13:10, NIV, which read, "Love does no harm to its neighbor. Therefore, love is the fulfillment of the law."

GOD doesn't put "riders" on His love for us. He loved us first, He loved us just because, He continues to love us because He is LOVE! I wonder how much better my relationships would be if I would get rid of the love insurance, the riders, and just love like JESUS.

So Little

I have often been amazed at how little it takes to help someone. I speak from the "helpee" side more than from the helper. People have don things for me that they considered insignificant but they will NEVER know the difference it made.

We often get so wrapped up in the fact that there is so much to do and there is no way that my little effort is going to fix the problem. While the effort we put forth may not be enough to completely alleviate the problem, if everyone did nothing because they couldn't do anything, then, nothing would ever get done.

Today's word is a quote from William James, which states, "Act as if what you do makes a difference. It DOES!"

What we are doing may seem mundane and casual and ordinary but to those who are receiving the benefit of our efforts, it really makes a difference. It is often hard to see where our efforts in the everyday is making any kind of beneficial difference but it truly does.

I won't take the time to try and give specific examples because there are so many and I would certainly not want to leave any of them out; they have all had an impact on my life. I am sure that if we would take the time to reflect on the little things others have done for us, we would all share the same sentiment - WOW!

So, the next time you are feeling as though what you are doing is just ordinary and useless, remember that what you are doing REALLY makes a difference! Keep doing it!

It's Tiring

There are things that really tire me out. I could list them but the list would get way too long, and listing them all would make me tired. I will talk about one of those tiring things, though.

Arguing really tires me out. Now, I am not talking about debating; I love to debate. I am known as playing the "devil's advocate". I am not his advocate but I do like to debate. I like the debate just to get people thinking and to have them make me think.

But, we are talking about arguing. Arguing wears me down and out quick, fast, and in a hurry. I can argue with someone for no more than five minutes and if feels as if I have run a mile. The effort expended, physically, emotionally, even spiritually is exhausting. Arguing is definitely one of those things that really tires me out.

Today's word is my paraphrase of an old Yiddish proverb. My paraphrasing is, "Nothing wears me out as much as doing something I do not like."

Have you ever noticed your children getting overly tired while doing homework? It is the middle of the evening, they are usually full of energy, bouncing off walls, but make them sit down and do homework and they are falling asleep as they write. Same goes for us all. Nothing wears us out like doing something we do not like.

We all have things that we just have to do. We all have things that we do not like that we must do. However, let's strive to do more of the things we want to do. Doing this will help us overcome the fatigue of having to do what we do not like.

My Plans

I've heard it said that if you want to hear GOD laugh just tell Him your plans. I am sure that GOD has received quite a few laughs at my planning. I am also sure that He has probably sat there and thought, "That boy will never learn." He is still working on me, and He has His hands full.

Don't get me wrong, we need to make plans. If you wait until the year you want to retire to start planning your retirement, you are going to come up lacking. If you wait until the last week of your senior year of high school to start sending out college entrance applications, you are WAY behind.

On the other hand, if you sit there without ever being in a certain situation and say, "Oh, if this ever happened to me, I would do such and such." You just never know. It is important to make plans and contingency plans but it is more important to realize Who is in control.

Our word for the day comes from Proverbs 19:21, NIV, which reads, "Many are the plans in a person's heart, but it is the LORD'S purpose that prevails."

It is important to make plans and to be prepared. It is foolish to think that our plans are more important and "better" than GOD'S. GOD has the absolute best planned for His children; all we have to do is follow His plan. If you ever want to hear GOD laugh, tell Him your plans...

Giving Credit

Have you ever had one of those associates, whether it be a boss, a coworker, a friend, etc., that will take the credit for whatever good thing is done. I know that I have been around enough people, and I have probably been that person from time to time, that will take all the credit for something that is not theirs to take.

One prime example I like to give to the "kids" is that of professional athletes. I am amazed at what some professional athletes can do. Some of my amazement may stem from the fact that I gave mediocrity a new name - sub par. Anyway, I am amazed at how these professional athletes can do amazing feats and, then, take credit for it all.

Don't get me wrong, I know they work really hard and train really hard but they have some GOD-given abilities that others don't have. How can they take credit for something that Someone gave them? They do seem to do it so easily. Not pointing fingers, though, because, as I said, I have been a credit hog myself.

Today's word comes from Psalm 115:1, NIV, which reads, "Not to us, O LORD, not to us, but to Your name be glory, because of Your love and faithfulness."

We can't take credit for the good things that GOD has just given us. Can we? It is easy to get wrapped up in ego and me, mine, my but the truth of the matter is that GOD has given us many good things because He loves us and is faithful to fulfill His promises.

LORD, forgive me for taking credit for anything that You have done. I know that it is because of Your great love for me that I am what I am and that I have what I have and that one day I will spend eternity in Heaven with You. Not because of anything I have done but because of Your great love!

Enough

Financial troubles seem to be the plight of every person/family from time to time. I can say with a certainty that my family has had its share of financial challenges. I would also venture to say that with the current economy and the ever changing employment environment, financial challenges have increased.

I find myself, at times, wondering, "Why me?" We try to be good stewards of all that we have and try to do all that we can with all that we have, yet, there are still numerous times that we end up with way more month than money. Ever been there?

It is during these times that I may feel as though I have missed out because we didn't get to take the big vacation or buy the new car or have the finest smart phone. Then, if I will take the time to really evaluate things, I find that things are quite different than I first perceived.

Today's word comes from Genesis 33:9, KJV, which reads, "And Esau said, 'I have enough, my brother, keep that thou hast unto thyself.'"

Esau, the guy who gave up his birthright and lost his blessing stands here before his brother, Jacob, and says, "I have enough." Isn't it a shame that we, as Christians who are guaranteed that GOD will supply ALL our needs, seem to always think that we need/deserve more. Don't we have enough?

When I take the time to look around and see my wonderful family, a dry warm/cool place to sleep, something to eat at every meal, and so much more, I see how truly blessed I am. But, more than that, when I realize ALL that JESUS has done for me, that one day I will spend eternity in Heaven with Him, I see how mistaken I am. You see, with JESUS, I have enough.

Happiness and Joy

Last night with the Youth, we discussed the difference between happiness and joy; there is a huge difference.   I like to think of it like this...happiness comes and goes, joy comes and stays.

We can do things that make us happy. I like Reese Cups, ALOT. So, if you give me a Reese Cup, I am pretty happy. Until I eat it and it is gone. Then, shortly thereafter, my happiness is gone.

Another example I like to use is that of buying a new car. You go out and buy a new car and for a while you are really happy. Then, after about six months or so, the new has worn off, and so has the happiness. That new car is nothing more than just another monthly payment.

There's an old Spanish proverb that goes, "Happiness itself does not stay--only moments of happiness do."

We can look for perpetual happiness and forever be disappointed. We must look for true joy. The only place to find true joy is through JESUS CHRIST. While happiness will come and go, true joy comes to stay!

Paper towels and mercy

We can make some pretty bad messes at our house. You may not have the problem of clumsiness but we seem to be overly blessed with the malady.

Recently, we had a mess that required some serious and quick clean up. However, we were at the end of the roll of paper towels. So, it took a little while to open the new roll and complete the job. At our house, there are times we could use a roll of paper towels three miles long. How about you?

Today's word comes from Lamentations 3:22 & 23, NIV, which reads, "Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning;great is your faithfulness."

I am so glad that GOD'S mercy doesn't run out. I don't know about you, but for me, He has to have a roll of compassion that cannot be measured. I do so many things and require so much mercy, yet, He has more. As a matter of fact, it is renewed each morning. I am humbled and amazed at GOD'S great mercy and compassion.

While paper towels may run out, we can rest assured that GOD'S great love and mercy is infinite.

One of GOD'S "buts"

Studying the Bible often leads to coming across one of GOD'S "buts". Don't you just love to see a "but" in the Bible. Something has been stated that usually isn't good - BUT- something else is then stated that tells us how it will actually turn out.

I think life would be extremely miserable and almost unbearable if not for the "buts". I have failed at many things "BUT" I am not a failure. I have fallen many times "BUT" I do not remain downtrodden. I have been forsaken by others "BUT" I am NEVER alone! What a wonderful little three letter word!

Today's word comes from Psalm 73:26, NIV, which reads, "My flesh and my heart may fail, but GOD is the strength of my heart and my portion forever."

Yes, MY flesh and MY heart may fail, BUT it is GOD, Who lives in my heart, that will see me through! Don't let life dictate who you are before you see the other side of the "but"!

What do you say

There's an old saying that goes, "If you want to be well liked, never lie about yourself, and be careful when telling the truth about others." While there will never be a single time in our lives that we will find everyone liking us, nor should we strive for that, we often times cause the division with our words.

I am sure that I could name several hundred things about myself that I would like to lie about but that would do no one any good, especially me. I have been called brutally honest but I am truly what you see is what you get. Not that that is anything to get excited about but it is what I am.

On the other hand, I have met many folks who seem to live by the philosophy that if I can make you look bad, it makes me look better. Allow me to say that that is not correct in any fashion. The only thing you do by trying to make someone else look bad is make yourself look worse. Trust me, I know these things.

A final thought, when your friend stands before you wanting to know what you think of their new hairstyle, clothes, car, boyfriend/girlfriend, etc., choose your words carefully. We absolutely need to speak the truth in love but be sure your words are laced with love. It is important to be honest with others; it is not imperative to be brutal.

Feeling Secure

Having a one year old teaches me more than I ever realized I needed to learn. It is definitely a true saying, "The more I learn, the more I realize how little I know." I have LOTS to learn.

Today, I would like to try and talk a little bit about security. Security means so many different things to so many different people. You have those that think security is money in the bank. Others think security is three dead bolts, a slide lock, and the knob locked. Yet, others think security is being wrapped in the arms of the one you love. All of these are things that make us secure but security can be summed up with "feeling free from danger."

A little blue blanket with footballs and basketballs and baseballs probably wouldn't provide much security in the way of protection from a meteor but to a one year old, it is the force field that makes him feel secure. He doesn't always have to have the blanket but when he has it, you can sense that it means something special to him.

Today's word comes from Hebrews 10:23, KJV, which reads, "Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised)." Another translation, the New Living Translation reads, "Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep his promise."

We can rest secure that GOD is going to do what He says He will do for He is faithful! Having an Awesome GOD that is going to protect us and see us through whatever this life may bring is more valuable than all other earthly treasures. That is security!

Shining Bright

There are times, especially during thunderstorms, that we find ourselves without electricity. It is amazing how much we have come to "rely" on electricity. It seems that we can hardly function without it.

When we find ourselves groping in the darkness trying to find our way to wherever it is that we strategically put the flashlights and candles so that they would easily be found in just such an emergency, we know that just a little light will make a big difference. All it takes is the illumination of just one little candle, just one flashlight glowing makes us feel a little warmer, safer, securer.

We don't have to light an entire candelabra to receive the comfort of just a little light. We don't have to have 1,000,000 candle power halogen lights to feel a little better about the darkness. While all the light might be better, the point is that just a little light can make a HUGE difference.

Today's word is a simple quote that reads, "Even a small star shines in the darkness." Let your light shine, others will see.

Just as that one little candle's glow on a dark, gloomy night, our light could really make a huge difference to a lost and dying world. Even a small star shines in the darkness. Let your light shine, others need the guidance.

Anxious Annie

Have you ever been anxious about anything? Have you ever been really nervous or wanting something to get here or get over with? Have you ever lost something and was really anxious to find it?

There are times when I get really anxious about things. I mean REALLY anxious. I am always running wide open wanting things to happen - NOW! I have found, though, that, sometimes, in my anxiousness, I actually overlook the one thing that could help with my situation. Maybe I should just slow down, take a breath, and really pay attention to what is in front of me.

Today's word comes from Philippians 4:6, NIV, which reads, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God."

When we are really stressed about things, really looking for an answer about something, we may really overlook what we desparately need if we aren't careful. Sometimes, what we really need to do is relax and allow GOD to do His thing (I sound really hypocritical writing that but it is true never the less).

Next time you are lost, or have lost something, don't be anxious or nervous. Make your requests to GOD through prayer, He'll send the answer. Then, make sure to thank Him. Being anxious will do nothing but cause us to run around and miss what we really are looking for. Leaving it with GOD will cause us to look around and see what we are missing.

Financial Advice

When I was much younger, my Pops gave all his children a two-dollar bill; I still have mine. He told us that as long as we kept that two-dollar bill, we would never be broke. Being a young child, I thought that the two-dollar bill must be some kind of good luck charm or something of that nature. As I got a little older, though, I realized that what Pops meant was that as long as I kept that two-dollar bill, I would never be broke because, I would have two dollars. I have kept my two dollars.

The word for today is an anonymous quote I have heard many times but it rings so true..."The quickest way to double your money is to fold it in half and put it back in your pocket."

We need to be wise with what GOD gives us; we need to be good stewards with all that He has entrusted us with. I have to admit that I haven't always been the wisest steward but I am certainly trying to get better. I realize the value of a dollar; I know how hard money is to come by and how quickly it leaves.

Learn to separate wants from needs. Fold that money up and put it back in your pocket. Better yet, go out and get you a two-dollar bill. As long as you keep that two-dollar bill, you will never be broke.

You can't hide anything

I remember as a child trying to hide things so others couldn't find them; even as an adult, the thought of Easter egg hiding comes to mind. We try to hide eggs for the smaller ones, trying to make it difficult but not impossible. However, there are times that we will realize that one is missing. We can't find it until mid-summer, and, then, only by smell.

We often try to hide things from GOD, too. We know we can't hide anything from Him but that never stops us from trying. I know I have had my times when I wasn't really doing anything bad but was doing something I shouldn't be, and thinking no one would ever know. It wasn't too far into it, though, that GOD'S Holy Spirit, residing in me, spoke and said, "Now, you know that ain't right. You can't hide anything."

Today's word comes from Psalm 139:1, NIV, which reads, "O LORD, You have searched me and known me."

GOD knows us whether we do it in secret or in the open. He knows our motivation, our incentive, our true intentions. I may not be the best at finding all the hidden eggs, but nothing is ever beyond the all seeing eye of GOD. Pray with me that I will be as diligent to openness as GOD is.

Integrity can be tough

I have a person who has called me a liar to my face. The reason this person thinks I am a liar is because I told them something and someone else told them something different. The other person "outranks" me so, they have to be more honest. Right? So, this person has taken the other person's word, and I have become a liar.

There is a way for me to prove I am not lying but it would cause me to have to break my word, which would make me a liar; so, therein lies the conundrum. I can either be thought a liar, or I can break my word and be a liar. Have you ever been there? It is a tough choice to make - the choice between proving you're right and being a person of integrity.

Integrity - doing the right thing even when no one is looking; doing the right thing even when it is difficult; doing the right thing even when it hurts; doing the right thing even when it sucks. I realize that "sucks" isn't a great word but it really describes the situation.

Today's word comes from Matthew 5:37, NIV, which reads, "Simply let your, "Yes," be, "Yes," and your, "No," "No,"; anything beyond this comes from the evil one."

It isn't always easy being a person of integrity but it is always worth it. I have prayed long and hard. I have fought self-pride and selfishness. But, in the end, being thought a liar is far better than being a liar. This person can think what they want but I will remain a person of integrity.

Perfect parenting

Last night we discussed with our "kids" in the Youth group that there is no such thing as a perfect parent. When one asked if that included me, I replied, "Absolutely." I then went on to say that there also is no perfect child, though I was really close (YEAH, RIGHT).

Allow me to digress for just a moment and say that when I was a child, I wasn't horrible but I was far from perfect. If you would look up mischievous in the dictionary it would have had my picture and my address. So, no, there are no perfect parents or children.

We do tend to often wish we could change our family; we want the perfect family. While our family will never be perfect, it is the perfect family for me. My family is the exact family GOD had in mind when He placed me in it, and vice versa. I bet my family may be reading this and thinking, "Why us LORD?"

The point I want you to get is that we are far from perfect but GOD will continue to work on us and help us to get there if we will let Him. Today's word comes from Psalm 138:8 (English Standard Version), which reads, "The LORD will fulfill His purpose for me; Your steadfast love, O LORD, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of Your hands."

Your family is not perfect, it never will be. My family will never be perfect. How can it be when I am a part of it. However, if we will continue to pursue GOD'S will, He will not forsake the work He is doing in us. I promise you, He has His hands full with me but He will continue His work to completion. Let's not worry so much about perfection and rest perfectly secure in GOD'S promise to continue working on us.

That first step can be a lulu


Not too many years ago, we had a small snow/ice storm. While this may be nothing uncommon for most, here in the deep south, this is quite unnatural. Anyway, we had had some snow and ice the prior evening and I was going out to start our car for church.

While we have snow and ice, occasionally, it rarely lays anywhere other than the grass and trees. However, we had a ramp attached to our back porch for easy access for a family member, and it was slick. Yes, it was slick but I couldn’t tell that by looking at it. You see, the snow was on the top, and it covered the slick ice underneath. From the top, it appeared you could walk down the ramp without any trouble. Boy, was I wrong!

As I began to walk down the ramp to warm our car, I slipped on the ice lying precariously under the light dusting of snow. I may not have seen the ice but it didn’t take long for me to feel its effect. As I timidly traversed the ramp, suddenly, I found myself looking up at my feet. Yes, looking up at my feet! This is the last thing I saw prior to slamming my back, shoulders, and head on the ramp.

That slippery ramp reminds me of today’s word, which comes from Hebrews 3:13, NIV, which reads, “But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called “Today,” so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.”

Sin is such a slippery slope. While it may look inviting, tempting, even safe from the top, one small step can send us hurtling down the slippery slope. All it takes is giving in to one thought, one covet, one desire, one weakness and we can find ourselves with our feet up in the air, and us in over our heads.

Sin is a slippery slope; don’t give in to the smallest temptation.

How much more


I read a statistic several years ago that stated that if Bill Gates tried to feed all the birds in the world, if he tried to buy enough bird feed to feed them all, he wouldn’t have enough money to feed them all for one single day.

One of the richest people in the world doesn’t have enough money to feed all the birds in the world for just one day. Yet, GOD feeds them all everyday. He doesn’t just feed them all; He has prepared enough for them to eat to fullness every single day.

Our word for the day comes from Matthew 6:26 (NIV), which reads, “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?”

I know we all struggle from time to time. I know that it is especially difficult in the current economic downturn. But, if GOD provides the basic needs for all the birds in the world, don’t you know He’ll take care of us?

We may not know how He is going to do it. We may not know when He is going to do it. We can have faith, though, that He is going to do it. GOD cares for the smallest creature, the smallest bird of the air. How much more valuable are you than they?

Idiots

I have often asked our Youth, "Do you know what an idiot is doing when you are arguing with him?" The answer? "The same thing, arguing with an idiot." Don't argue with idiots, it is a waste of your time, and theirs.

Today's word comes from Proverbs 3:30, and today I have used GOD'S Word Translation. Proverbs 3:30 (GWT) reads, "Do not quarrel with a person for no reason if he has not harmed you."

We seem to want ot argue with everyone about everything. Well, maybe I should just speak for myself. Sometimes, it seems that I can't do anything but make snide remarks and argue with everyone about any and every thing; this ought not be so.

There are things in life worth discussion, debate, even arguing but, I would venture to say, that most things we argue about aren't worth the argument. The next time you find yourself in an argument with an idiot, step back and see if they are in the same predicament.

Geometry

We all know that the shortest distance between two points is a straight line. I remember discussing this in great detail during geometry class, where, with right angles/triangles, the hypotenuse is the shortest distance between points "A" and "B".

We all remember the word problem...Johnny leaves his house and walks west 1000 feet, then, turns right and walks north 3000 feet. How far is Johnny from his home. Of course, we use Pythagorean's theorem (a2 + b2 = c2) and salve for c to find the shortest distance (a straight line).

Today's word isn't about geometry or Pythagorean but the thought of a straight line leads me to our passage today, found in Matthew 7:13 & 14 (KJV), which reads, "13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: 14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it."

It often seems that people will wander to and fro seeking after everything in the world to fill that void they have in their hearts. They will walk miles in one direction, turn and walk miles in another but all they need is to walk the straight line to JESUS.

True Friends

We were discussing friends in our Youth study last night - true friends versus fake friends. We have all found ourselves surrounded by those whom we thought were our friends but, in the end, we found they were only fair weather friends.

I've heard it said that you can count your true friends on one hand. WOW! I have so many people that I consider true friends; it is certainly a sad commentary that my really true friends are less than I think. I really believe that I do have true friends that would be there no matter what. I pray that you do to.

So, how do we know if our friend is a true friend? Well, I am glad you asked...today's word is from the NIV found in Proverbs 17:17, which reads, "A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity."

Our true friends are going to love us at all times. They may not always agree with us, they may not always approve of us, but they will always love us. Those fake friends, those fair weather friends are the ones that when the going gets tough, they get going. When you need them the most, those fake friends will leave you the fastest.

We truly need to pray and ask for GOD'S discernment when it comes to choosing our friends. The last thing we need is to be depending on someone's friendship and it not be there when it is needed most. I am not talking about extenuating circumstances preventing someone from being there; I am talking about a friend that is only a "friend" when things are good. Ask GOD to lead you to true friends; we all need them.

One final note...I always keep in mind that in order to have friends, we must, first, show ourselves friendly. Not only do I need true friends, I need to be a true friend. Pray that GOD will guide me, aid me, assist me and equip me to be the friend that I need to be. A true friend loves at all times. Be a true friend.
