Old Stuff New Again

Have you ever done any restoration projects? It seems that we own a lot of stuff that needs restoring, and I have had the opportunity to try my hand at it on several occasions. I won't even try to admit to being very good at it, I'm not. But, there is something to be said about taking a piece that has been battered and worn and making it useful again.

We have an old table that sits in our dining room holding a microwave and a coffee maker. The table was handed down to Trish and me from my Mom, who had received it from her Mom, and no telling how long my Grandma had had it, or if it may have been handed down to her from her Mom. But, through the years, that old table has been used, and has looked battered and worn many times. And, it has been taken out, cleaned up, freshly painted, everything tightened up, and back into use.

Today's word is Lamentations 5:21, NLT, which reads, "Restore us, O LORD, and bring us back to You again! Give us back the joys we once had!"

Like that old table of ours, many times in life we find ourselves battered and worn from the everyday existence in this world. This world can beat you down and wear you out and leave you feeling useless. BUT, GOD is in the restoration business. He wants us to call out to Him, to draw near to Him, to allow Him to clean us up, brighten us up, tighten us up. He wants to restore to us the joys we once had.

Life can hard. Life can be tiring. Life can take more from us than we could ever imagine. Life can steal our joys. BUT, GOD can give it all back. Just like our old table, there is usefulness in us all. We just have to be willing to do some restoration.

Yeah, but they'll lose

It seems that someone is always out to get someone else, especially if you're a Christian. Now, Christians are not perfect, they sin, they make mistakes, they do wrong things, they make people angry. But, if you're a Christian, trying to do the right things, trying to be a good example, making a stand for something that isn't right in GOD'S eyes, folks will come against you.

When folks try to come against you for trying to do the right thing, it should come as no surprise. JESUS tells us in John 15:18 to not be surprised if the world hates us because it hated Him first. But, I'm human, as we all are, and it is difficult to see why things and people seem to rise up against Christians. However, we know Who is on our side...

Today's word is Jeremiah 1:19, NLT, which reads, "They will fight you, but they will fail. For I am with you , and I will take care of you, I, the LORD, have spoken."

Yeah, they will fight Christians, they will persecute them, they will drag them through the mud, they will put them through the wringer, BUT, they will fail. Maybe that's why they fight so hard because deep in their hearts they know how defeated they truly are. They might get a few earthly victories, they may win a few earthly battles, but the war is over - VICTORY is WON!

As long as we Christians are in this world, where satan rules, there will be oppression and opposition. Yet, we can rest safely knowing that GOD is with us and will take care of us. They may rise up against us and try to tear us down - but, in the end, they will lose. Let's pray that GOD will touch all their hearts too so that no one has to lose.

It's Stressful

If you didn't know, life is full of stress. I have mentioned before that you are either in a storm, coming out of a storm, or headed into a storm. We live in a broken and fallen world and things are going to happen - to the just and the unjust. Sometimes it seems as if we can't get through one thing before another crops up. There will be storms.

If you allow yourself to worry about every little thing, and it is easy to do, it will drive you crazy. There are a lot of things that I am concerned about: my family, our finances, my children's future, the health of loved ones, the needs of others, the state of this world, retirement...lots of concerns. So, how do you not allow it to consume you? I am glad you asked.

Today's word is Isaiah 26:3, NLT, which reads, "You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in You, all whose thoughts are fixed on You!"

If we will keep our minds on GOD and on doing what He wants us to do, we will find peace in knowing that we are doing His will and His will is working for our good to prosper us and bring us to a good end. Yeah, there will be those times of doubt and wonder and exhaustion and stress but we can rest in perfect peace knowing that GOD has it in control. Easier said than done, huh?

I am going to work on doing exactly as this verse describes. You have to flip the two halves around: "All whose thoughts are fixed on YOU, YOU will keep in perfect peace..." It is when we allow this world to take a broader focus than our GOD that we become more and more stressed; I'm as guilty as anyone. I am going to try to focus on GOD and on doing His will. I bet I will find that things still happen, that life is still fraught with stresses. Yet, I bet I'll also find that there are lots of things to be concerned about but nothing to worry about.

His desire is for me

I am on the eve of celebrating another wedding anniversary with the greatest woman GOD ever created. Yeah, you can argue with me if you want, but you'd still be wrong. Just kidding, of course, but Trish is mine. GOD created her for me. He knew what I would need, what I would require in a spouse, what she would require in order to put up with me, and He created Trish for that purpose. I know, bless her heart.

After all this time together, I still desire Trish. And, I don't just mean that in a physical sense. I mean, I want to be with her, just be with her. I love to talk with her, walk with her, hold her hand, just be near her. My desire for her hasn't waned one bit in all our years together. As a matter of fact, it has only grown stronger.

Today's word is Song of Solomon 7:10, NIV, which reads, "I belong to my beloved, and His desire is for me."

As strong as my desire for Trish is, it pales in comparison to GOD'S desire for us. He loves us. We are His children. If you are saved, you are part of the Bride of CHRIST. We are the reason He left the splendor of Heaven and came to provide the price for our freedom from sin - that is LOVE. Have you ever really considered how much GOD desires you, desires a relationship with you? Well, His sacrifice on the cross is proof of His love and desire for each of us.

Yeah, I am certainly blessed to be sharing another anniversary with the one I truly love and desire. And, it is because of the example of LOVE that GOD has demonstrated that we can fully and freely love one another. I am amazed that with all my faults and failures that His desire is for me.

The Good Ol' Days

Pops, rest his soul, always longed for the "good ol' days". On countless occasions, he would begin telling a story of the simpler times of growing up on the farm, with no air conditioning, no television, no microwave ovens, not much of any modern convenience. When he would begin one of his stories, one of his grandchildren would usually say, "Oh no, another farm story."

Now, Pops surely knew that the conveniences we enjoy today made life a little easier than it was in his childhood and youth. I don't think he would have wanted to go back to living without air conditioning and cable television. How could he have ever watched all the re-re-reruns of Gunsmoke and Bonanza? Looking back too much can get us into trouble...

Today's word is Ecclesiastes 7:10, NLT, which reads, "Don't long for 'the good old days'. This is not wise."

There's a lot to be said for the good old days, when things were simpler and crime was lower and people had to work to earn what they had. There's something to be said about not having all the modern conveniences that become more of a nuisance and a hindrance. There are lots of good things about the good old days but we aren't living in the past - we are here now.

While the good old days are fun to remember and certainly dear to our hearts, GOD has us here today for a reason. We can't continue to press forward if we are constantly looking back. As we have discussed before, there is a reason the windshield is so large and rear view mirror is so small - GOD intends for us to be looking forward and only glancing back.

We are here now to do GOD'S good work. Keep pressing forward, working hard, doing what GOD has called us to do. If we do that, we will look back at this time period and realize that they, too, were good old days.

Fulfilled Dreams

We've all had desires, and we all have desires. Last week at VBS, when one of the youth asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I replied, "Retired". I am, sometimes, the ultimate child. I love having a good time. I love trying to make people laugh. I love being around folks. But, I do have a desire to retire one day. I want to spend more time with Trish, more time being available, more time just enjoying doing nothing.

Now, I am in no hurry to retire. While it is a desire, it is not one that I long for or yearn for; retirement will come way too soon for most of us. But, we have all had those desires that seemed they would never be fulfilled, those dreams that seemed as if they would always be just a dream, yet, I would venture to say that we can all look back and remember the feeling of a dream fulfilled.

Today's word is Proverbs 13:12, NLT, which reads, "Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a dream fulfilled is a tree of life."

It is the longing, the waiting, that seems to drain us and wear us down. We want something so much but it seems it will never happen. And, because it seems it will never happen, yet, we want it so bad, it makes us heart sick. If we dwell on it too much or for too long or too often, we may even find ourselves physically sick. Stress does strange things to our bodies. BUT...

You gotta love the "buts" in the Bible. "BUT, a dream fulfilled is a tree of life." When we finally see the fulfillment of a long awaited dream, it bolsters us up and renews our innermost being. Whatever you are dreaming, if it is in GOD'S will, keep dreaming. And, on those days that it seems that it will never happen, remember all the times that GOD has fulfilled your desires before. Remembering GOD'S goodness will give us the strength to keep pushing forward until our dreams are fulfilled.

Sweet Sleep

In my last rambling, I mentioned that I have MAJOR trust issues. Yet, I fully trust GOD. I know that He is going to take care of things. It is because of this complete trust in the LORD that I can lie down and sleep at night. Yes, I have my bouts of insomnia, which come for no rhyme nor reason. But, I know that once I get to sleep, GOD will watch over and protect and keep us.

Our two little ones have trouble sleeping through the night even now. Sometimes, they sleep really soundly all night; sometimes they are up most every night. What awakes them or keeps them from falling back to sleep is insecurity; they need to know that we are still there and that they are protected and safe. So, we have started reciting today's word each night in their rooms.

Today's word is Psalm 4:8, NIV, which reads, "In peace I will lie down and sleep, for You alone, LORD, make me dwell in safety."

It is because of GOD'S love for us, His care for us, His protection over us, that we can relax and sleep peacefully. We can rest assured that GOD is watching over us and that there is absolutely nothing to be concerned about. We can nuzzle up close and fall asleep peacefully in His arms.

The next time you have a little trouble sleeping because of things going on in your life, try reciting today's word. You may just find some sweet sleep.

Trust Issues

I have major, MAJOR, trust issues. I have had them my entire life. I have probably mentioned this before but it bears repeating, I cannot remember a single episode that set off my trust issues but I do know I have had them for as long as I can remember.

Maybe it's the fact that I have seen too many instances of people breaking their trust. Maybe it's the fact that I have heard too many people tell one thing just to find out they did something entirely different. Maybe it's the fact that I have had too many people break too many promises to me. Maybe it's the fact that I know my own shortcomings, and I figure most people are just as fallible as I am.Whatever it is, I don't trust a lot of people

Today's word is Job 13:15, NIV, which reads, "Though He slay me, yet will I hope in Him; I will surely defend my ways to His face."

Job had been through a lot. He had lost everything, including his health. His "friends" are telling him how sorry he must be, that he must have done something pretty bad to have GOD bring all this upon him. Even his wife was telling Job to just, "curse GOD and die." BUT...

I told you before that I like the BUTs...BUT, Job knew he had been faithful, he knew that GOD had been good to him, he knew that he was no better than anyone else, he knew that it rained on the just and the unjust, he knew that GOD had things under control, he knew that GOD was working things for his good, and he knew that he could trust Him. Do you know that? Do you know that, come what may, you can trust that GOD will bring you through? Job did.

I have major, MAJOR, trust issues. Always have, probably always will. But, even with all my trust issues, I know that I can trust GOD with anything and everything. I pray I can be like Job and say, "Though He slay me, yet will I hope in Him!"

That's what love will do

The story of Esther is one of the best love stories anyone could ever read. Some people like Romeo and Juliet, which is classic, but I find the stories of Esther and Ruth to be the best love stories to read, with the exception of the Love of CHRIST, which is the greatest love story ever. But, I digress...

The King chose Esther to be his queen above all other women. She was apparently quite beautiful but his love for her was much deeper than the superficial physical love. He loved her enough to want to sacrifice for her and to try and please her. I mentioned before that our youth know that true love is about giving, not getting. Someone who truly loves you isn't always trying to figure out what they can get from you but are going out of their way to ensure they give you what you need.

Today's word is Esther 5:3, NLT, which reads, "Then the king asked her, 'What do you want Queen Esther? What is your request? I will give it to you, even if it is half the kingdom!'"

The Queen, Esther, was going before the King to ask for assistance with trying to save her people. GOD had put Esther there for just this moment. She had prayed and fasted and sought GOD'S will. She knew that the king had the power to put her away, or even have her killed, for appearing before him without an "appointment". Yet, she needed to make her request.

When she walked in, I can almost see King Ahasuerus rise up on his throne and grin from ear to ear. He was happy to see her! He was thrilled to see her unannounced, in the middle of the day! It was truly an unexpected blessing to see this woman that he loved so much! But, it didn't stop there. The king knew from Eshter's countenance that something wasn't right. He asked what was wrong. He wanted to do what he could to please her and make her happy. And, he didn't just stop there.

The king looked at Esther and said, "I will give it to you, even if it is half the kingdom!" He was willing to sacrifice for the one he loved. Do you love someone like that? Does someone love you like that? I am blessed to love and be loved with that much passion and desire. Yes, I love Trish. She is my Thang. And, I know she loves me, really loves me. But, I am talking about JESUS.

JESUS died for us all to take away our sins and to make a way for us to be adopted into the royal family. His love for us was sacrificial and gave us something that money or effort or time could ever provide. He gives me so much on a daily basis that I could never tell of His goodness and grace. That's what love will do.

The right mindset

Have you ever wanted anything so bad you were willing to work for it? Most things in life don't come easy. Yeah, there are those things that GOD blesses us with that are just that, GOD'S blessings. Yet, there are other things that we really have to work for, really have to commit to, really have to sacrifice for. You all know what I mean.

The only way you will ever run a 5K is to work up to running a 5K. Now, you can think about running a 5K; you can talk about running a 5K; you can watch others run a 5K; but, none of those will end with you running a 5K. In order to run a 5K, or to accomplish any other goal or task, you have to commit and do it.

Today's word is Nehemiah 4:6, ESV, which reads, "So we built the wall. And the wall was joined together to half its height, for the people had a mind to work."

Nehemiah and the Israelites were rebuilding the walls. They were determined to get the job done. They were committed to completing the task. They weren't going to let anything or anyone deter them from doing what GOD had called them to do. Their motivation, their drive, is found in the last five words of this verse, "(they) had a mind to work."

As Pops used to tell me and try to instill in me, "Anything worth having is worth working for." Will it be easy? Probably not. Will it be tiring? Probably. Will it be worth it? Absolutely. If we will set our minds to doing what GOD has called us to do, and determine in our minds and our hearts that we are going to do it, we will find that it was worth it, and that it is exactly what we wanted. And, it all begins with having a mind to work.

Earnest Prayer

If you look up the definition of "earnest", you'll read, "resulting from or showing sincere and intense conviction". When you do something in earnest, you do it with everything you have, you give it all you've got. When you do something earnestly, you don't hold anything back, you don't allow anything to hinder you. When's the last time you earnestly prayed?

I admit, I'm as guilty as anyone of, sometimes, just going through the motions of praying. I say the right words, I use all the right phrases, I use all the proper nouns. I want GOD to hear my prayers and grant my requests, and I think I am earnest in my praying, but am I really?

Today's word is Ezra 8:23, NLT, which reads, "So we fasted and earnestly prayed that our GOD would take care of us, and He heard our prayer."

We've had a lot going on in our lives lately and we have prayed about it all. We've been very specific and very purposeful in our prayers. We know that we need GOD to intervene and help us accomplish all that we know He wants for us. We want to be what He wants us to be and we want to serve where and how He wants, and we pray earnestly for His will in every aspect of our lives.

Got something you've been praying for that you really need an answer? Have you been praying earnestly, sincerely, with intense conviction? If so, you can rest assured that GOD will answer your prayer in His way, in His time. When you pray, pray for us, earnestly pray for us. We want to be His servants and to do His will. If we earnestly seek that, He will hear and take care of us.

The eyes of the LORD

I have mentioned on a few occasions how we all like to get a little recognition for the hard work and effort we put forth. It's nice to be noticed and appreciated for doing what you are supposed to do and then some. There are a lot of times that it seems that others take credit for your hard work or that you don't get the accolades you deserve for doing such a stupendous job.

I am sure that we have all felt that way at some time or another in our lives. I am sure that we have all wondered how it was even remotely fair for all the recognition to go to someone else and all the non-recognition to be ours. However, take comfort that the ONE that really matters sees all your hard work.

Today's word is 2 Chronicles 16:9a, NIV, which reads, "For the eyes of the LORD range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to Him..."

While it may appear that no one sees your efforts, no one sees your perseverance, no one sees your attention to details, no one recognizes your accomplishments, rest assured that the ONE that really matters sees it all. He knows how hard you've tried; He knows the effort you put forth; He knows the integrity in which you operate; He knows all you've done because He watches every move.

When it feels as if I am not getting a fair shake and that I am not appreciated for all that I do, I am going to try to keep this verse in mind. It is nice to receive praise for you effort; it's nicer to know that GOD is the ultimate Judge, and He sees all.

Each Morning and Evening

How often do you thank GOD? Is it more often than you ask for something? If you're anything like me, the answer is no. I tend to ask for way more than I ever give thanks for. I know, it's a shame. I have been blessed beyond my wildest imagination, yet, I tend to ask for more than I give thanks for. I'm working on that.

I have been trying to make a conscious effort to thank GOD for all He has bestowed upon me. I have mentioned before that if I really started trying to thank GOD for all His blessings, I would never finish. The blessings that come from the every day are more than I can ever express and, still, He gives me even more. But, I'm trying...

Today's word is 1 Chronicles 23:30, NLT, which reads, "And each morning and evening they stood before the LORD to sing songs of thanks and praise to Him."

As I mentioned, I am trying to more conscious of my thanksgiving; GOD certainly deserves it. Today's word is a reminder to me to put forth the effort to acknowledge all the great things GOD gives me DAILY. I do request a lot; I want to praise and thank Him a lot too.

Join with me in this goal to thank GOD each morning and evening for His goodness, mercy, and grace. I would dare say that we all have more to be thankful for than we thank Him for. I know I certainly do.

He will supply

I heard Dr. David Jeremiah on the radio this morning preaching about worry and how worry accomplishes nothing but an early grave (my paraphrasing, of course). We all tend to worry, everyone. There seems to be enough in this world to be concerned about - our kids, their futures, college, overwhelming debt, sicknesses, illnesses, and the list goes on. Needless to say, there is something to worry about if that is your chosen pastime.

But, why worry? Even as I write this I know that I am as guilty of it as anyone. But, why? Why Worry? What does worry accomplish? Now, GOD expects us to do our part; we need to make sure that we are faithful and that we aren't doing all the wrong things. And, if we are doing that, GOD will take care of the rest.

Today's word comes from 2 Kings 4:6, NIV, which reads, "When all the jars were full, she said to her son, 'Bring me another one.' But he replied, 'There is not a jar left.' Then the oil stopped flowing."

The story from 2 Kings 4 tells of a widow whose sons were about to be taken as collateral by her deceased husband's creditors for debts. She was desperate. What could she do? Elisha asked what she had and she told him just a little oil. He told her to go to her neighbors and ask for every available jar, not just a few, but for every jar she could get her hands on. Then, go inside and start filling those jars with the oil from her, what she thought, limited supply. When she faithfully did what she was instructed to do, she filled every jar until there were NONE left. She was then instructed to sell the oil and pay her indebtedness. But, it didn't stop there. Not only did she pay her indebtedness, verse 7 finishes with, "You and your sons can live on what is left."

We serve an AWESOME GOD! Whatever concerns you have, give them to GOD. Yes, I have my worries and concerns. No, I don't always give them all to GOD. Yes, I know that worry is doing no one any good, especially me. I need to be reminded by stories like today's; reminded that He will supply.

What would I ask for?

Have you ever played the game, "What would you wish for if you could have anything you want?" I think we all have at some time or another. It is an interesting question to pose and an interesting question to answer. I mean, if you could have ANY thing you might ask for, what might you ask for?

Some would request money, money, money. Some would want fame and fortune. Some would ask for long life. Maybe others would ask for more time with a loved one or that their loved one would receive what they needed.

Today's word is from 1 Kings 3:9, NLT, which reads, "Give me an understanding heart so that I can govern Your people well and know the difference between right and wrong..."

Solomon was praying for GOD to give him wisdom and understanding. He could have asked for anything, like I so often do, but what he asked for was discernment, to determine what was right and wrong in order to rule and govern the way GOD wanted him to. I'd like to think that I would do the right thing and ask for the right thing and do good with my "one wish" but I don't really know; my prayers don't always show that side of me. My prayers are often much more selfish and self-serving.

If you read the rest of this account, you will see that GOD was pleased with Solomon's request and made him the wisest person that ever lived or that will ever live. But, He didn't stop there. GOD also gave Solomon what he didn't ask for: long life, wealth, prosperity, honor.

I am going to try to keep this account in mind when I pray. GOD knows my heart, and I want my heart to be in tune with His.

Let's Dance

Ever hear a catchy tune and before you can think about your self-consciousness you find yourself dancing? Yeah, my dancing lacks a lot to be desired - A LOT. But, every now and then, when I least expect it, I will find myself cutting a rug. When things make you happy, really happy, it is hard to hide the joy.

Now, some people may find it offensive to dance at any time, and I don't just mean my dancing. I mean, some people think that any kind of dancing is wrong. Well, I won't argue with anyone's beliefs but I can tell you that, sometimes, GOD gives me such joy that I cannot not dance. King David had one of those experiences...

Today's word is 2 Samuel 6:14, NLT, which reads, "And David danced before the LORD with all his might..."

David had experienced GOD'S blessings in such a way that he couldn't contain his joy, and he danced. Now, I don't think David was dancing like a junior high young man at his first school dance. No, I think David DANCED. The verse tells us that he danced with all his might. David was dancing and expressing the joy in his heart. And, GOD loved it.

The next time GOD pours you out a blessing that you can handle contain, cut loose. Not to be an outward display for anyone, not to make a spectacle of yourself, and not to try to bring attention to yourself, but if GOD gives you the urge to dance, dance. GOD is good - all the time! And, all the time, GOD is good! Let's dance!

Be Faithful

There are so many distractions in life. No matter where you turn or where you go or what you do or what you look at, there's something there to try and cause you to fail. It's easy, especially when you are tired or weak or worn or frazzled or stressed or worried to let your guard down and be led astray. It's also easy to be led astray when you are looking for an ego boost or when you are power hungry.

There have been countless examples of folks that started out well but began to take their eyes off GOD and His plan and started trying to fuel their own desires and egos. I won't name names because we should pray for one another, and they have had to deal with the fallout. But, suffice it to say that it is when we begin to think we have "arrived", when we begin to think that we don't need GOD, when we begin to think that we are "all that and a falafel" that we may find ourselves losing more than we ever imagined.

Today's word is 1 Samuel 13:14, NIV, which reads, "But now your kingdom will not endure; the LORD has sought out a man after His own heart and appointed him ruler of His people, BECAUSE you have not kept the LORD'S command."

Saul was king and had gotten to a point that he was jealous of David. Saul didn't like the way folks talked so highly of David and how David had received accolades for being faithful (yes, David had his own problems later). So, Saul decided he would do things his way to prove that he was KING, that he was powerful; he wanted to boost his own ego instead of advancing GOD'S kingdom. And, because of his selfish desires, he lost it all.

GOD has something for us all to do. Others may receive accolades and pats on the back and countless other earthly praises. I admit that it gets to us all from time to time to not get the credit that we feel we deserve. Yet, I want to be found faithful. I want GOD to use me as He sees fit. I want to be His servant, a man after His own heart.

Be Blessed,

May the LORD repay you

I have a really good friend that will often say, "Thanks will have to do until you get better pay in Heaven." What he means by that is that he doesn't have a lot of money to pay you for helping him with things but he sincerely appreciates the assistance and better pay (rewards) will come. But, I think it is far deeper than even he realizes.

What if we truly did everything as if we were doing it for GOD. Would we really be overly concerned about the pay or the recognition? Would we really be concerned about the notoriety or publicity? Would we really be concerned about getting credit or self-promotion? No, we would be humbled by the fact that GOD found us worthy enough to be useful.

Today's word is Ruth 2:12, NLT, which reads, "May the LORD, the GOD of Israel, under Whose wings you have come to take refuge, reward you fully for what you have done."

Again, I have to make a certain amount of money in order to provide the necessities for my family. I would be less of a man if I didn't provide for my family. However, what if I truly keep in mind that GOD is going to give me my final "paycheck"? And, it's not going to be dollars and cents - it's going to be motives and intents. What if GOD "rewards you fully for what you have done", the good and the bad?

I want to please my LORD by working hard and diligently in whatever area He desires. I want Him to be pleased with my efforts and to see that I am trying to do all things for His glory. Do I fail? You betcha. Do I want to do better? You betcha. Why? Because the LORD will reward me FULLY for ALL that I do. I want to please Him.

Be Blessed,
Mickey T
